Year 4
Writing
In our Literacy lessons we are exploring the book 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan.
We are enjoying our sentence stacking lessons and learning new skills for writing so that we can create an independent piece of writing based around this text. Click on the image to watch the animated story.
During guided reading lessons we are exploring chapter one from the story of 'The Boy Underwater' by Adam Baron. We are practising our reading fluency, understanding word meanings in context and making sense of what we read by creating a summary. We will be answering retrieval questions, sequencing ideas and using our inference skills to think more about the characters and events in the book. Maths
In maths we are learning all about tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals. We are working extremely hard to learn all of our times tables up to 12X12 with quick and accurate recall!

This term, children will explore the topic of ‘Jesus, the Teacher’.
We will explore how Jesus was presented at the temple as a baby and learn how Jesus was Jewish. Children will learn about Jesus' baptism and how we called people to follow him. Children will understand how Jesus often taught people using stories with messages in them. We will explore two of these stories; 'The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant' and 'The Parable of the Sower.'
Children will reflect on how they can be disciples of Jesus in their daily lives.
The Parable of the Sower
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant based on Matthew 18:21-35.
We are exploring the book 'Journey' by Aaron Becker.
Children will explore high level, rich vocabulary and are taught grammar in context through different writing lenses.
Journey by Aaron Becker
Beautiful story telling through images.
Sharing books and stories with children helps children learn vital skills for reading and writing, but sharing books also helps with talking, listening and communication skills. It encourages imagination, curiosity and explores emotions in the safe world of the book.
During guided reading sessions this half term, we will be exploring non-fiction texts and developing the skills of locating answers within the text. We will also continue to develop our skills using inference through a range of short texts and images.
Some of Year 4's favourites include Tom Gates, Enid Blyton Roald Dahl and Rosie Banks. We are currently reading 'The Secret Forest' By Enid Blyton during story time.
In our reading corner this half term, we will have books written by Tom Gates, Francesca Simons, Elisabeth Beresford and Amelia Cobb.
We are focusing on multiplication and division for the next couple of weeks. Children will learn about factors, including factor pairs, multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100, using related facts and using a written method to multiply and divide 2 and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number.
Children are expected to know their times tables up to 12X12 with quick and confident recall by the end of Year 4. Children have access to 'Times Tables Rock Stars' three times a week in class and are encouraged to log on at home and practise their times tables.
Factors for the First Time
Click on the image below to find out more about how to multiply and divide by 10 and 100.
We have introduced a new reading system in school to encourage reading for pleasure. This means that children will be reading age and phonic appropriate books in school every day, and that the books that come home will be books children have chosen to read for pleasure. If your child struggles to read the book for pleasure they have chosen, please read it with them so they enjoy the reading experience and be reassured that they are reading with an adult in school as well each day.
- Daily reading - at least 20 minutes per day. Please, record your child's reading homework in their reading log. These will be checked daily.
- Daily arithmetic (Times Tables Rock Stars and paper copy of times tables sent home every Friday)
- Daily spelling (Spelling Frame. Please complete the test on a Tuesday or Wednesday).
It is important for children to know their times tables fluently. They should practise their times tables at home daily. This will help them with quick and accurate recall.
All children in Year 4 have free access to Times Tables Rock Stars. This is a fantastic resource for children to practise their times tables daily, and as they play they can earn "coins" which will enable them to customise their avatar. Miss Burke can can see a summary of each child's results, including how many questions they answered correctly/incorrectly and the time they took to complete them.
Children's usernames and passwords for TTRS are recorded in their red reading diaries.

By the end of Year 4, children are expected to be able to spell the words from the Y3/ Y4 spelling list. These often make up part of the children's weekly spellings homework. Please see the document below so that you can support your child with their spellings.
Children also have their own log in details for 'Spelling Frame' so that they can access games and learn their spellings each week. Please help children to access this regularly at home.
