Writing

In our Literacy lessons we are exploring a newspaper article about 'The Creature'.  We are learning the features of a newspaper article and using noun phrases, alliteration and rhetorical questions to make our writing exciting and enjoyable for the reader. We will be learning about direct and indirect speech and how to create relative clauses.

Reading

For the next couple of weeks, we are exploring chapter 1 from 'The Griffin Gate' by Vashti Hardy.  

We are practising our reading fluency skills and exploring the meaning of new words in context so that we can make sense of what we read. We are developing our retrieval skills with independence and developing our inference and explanations with some support. 

  

Maths

In maths, we are learning all about decimals. This week, we are learning how to make a whole with tenths and hundredths. We will also partition decimal numbers.

Year 4 successfully beat Year 3 in 'Battle of the Bands' during the spring term. Now it's time to compete against Year 5! 

Religious Education

We are learning about Jesus' life through the branch 'To the Ends of the Earth'.  

We will be exploring Pentecost, the Ascension and the beginning of the Church. We will deepen our understanding of what happens during Mass and how this links the Exodus Passover and the Last Supper.  

 

               

Science

Our science topic this half-term is all about 'electricity'. 

This week, we will be learning all about electrical and non-electrical appliances.

History

Our topic this half-term we are learning all about the Anglo-Saxons. This week, we will be learning all about the

Anglo-Saxon migration.

Art

During the spring term, we learnt all about 'collage'. We used different techniques which will help us to create a final design using collage.  We know that paper can be cut or ripped, in shapes, strips or off cuts. We can use bold coloured paper, patterned paper and even make our own colourful designs.  

  

Our first topic in Y4 was textiles. We learnt how to deconstruct fabric to look at threads and we developed our skills in weaving. We created patterns with running stitches and how to embellish. We were very proud of our finished product!

                     

                  

                  

        

Design Technology

This term, we will be exploring electronics. This week, we are developing our science knowledge of electrical appliances and looking at inputs and outputs on different appliances. 

 

Our DT topic during the spring term was 'Keep it Safe'. We looked at shell structures and deconstructed cardboard boxes to investigate how they were constructed. We then looked at nets and the purpose of these and rebuilt the structures! We are very excited to be building our own structures this week!

      

              

PE

Children have PE every Monday with Miss Burke. We are developing our throwing, running and jumping in athletics. 

 PE with Coach Luke is every Friday. The topic for this half-term is dodgeball. 

 

 

 

Reading

Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes per day. Please, record your child's reading homework in their reading diary. These will be checked daily.

Timetables/Arithmetic

Children should be learning their timetables for at least 10 minutes per day on Times Tables Rock Stars. 

Spelling

Children should be practising their spellings for at least 10 minutes per day on Spelling Frame. Children should complete their online spelling test on Tuesday or Wednesday ready for their test on Thursday morning. 

*Children will be tested on their spelling and times tables every Thursday. They will take their test books home every Friday to share their achievements with parents. Please ensure they are brought back into school on Monday morning.*

Weekly homework

Children will receive a piece of homework based on reading, SPAG or maths on weekly basis. This will be given out on Mondays and should be returned to school on Thursday morning. This homework should take around 20 minutes to complete. 

 

We have writing, reading and maths lessons every morning through the week. In the afternoons we have science, RE, art, geography, music, RSE and PE lessons. 

Monday- PE kit, homework to be taken home. 

Wednesday- PE kit, Spanish with Miss Allen and PE with Luke. 

Thursday- Homework is due in, spelling and timetables test.

Friday- Praise assembly

 

We loved dressing up for World Book Day!

       

We had a 'bright day' on Thursday 3rd October to remind us of the importance of wearing something bright to stay safe during the darker evenings when we are walking and using our bikes and scooters. Cars and other vehicles can see us more easily!

W/C 28th April: Skipping challenge in school.  

Thursday 8th May : 80th Anniversary of VE Day. 

Wednesday 21st March: National Numeracy Day. We will explore this in school and set a homework task.
