Year 5

EMrs Hodgson, Mrs Dowdeswell and Mrs Abbate hope you had a good half term holiday- welcome back for Spring 2!

   Writing

During this half-term we will be exploring two texts! First, we will dive into Lights on Cotton Rock, an extraterrestrial tale which will help spark imaginations and ignite our studies of complex sentences. Secondly, we will look at the poem Moth by Isabel Thomas and Daniel Egneus, and will explore how a poem can use it's subtext to teach a moral lesson.

We will be using sentence-stacking lessons to build upon our ideas as we focus on new writing styles and techniques to engage our readers. We will work both collaboratively and independently to write, edit and publish our work.

   Reading

In Year 5 we love to read! We really enjoy hearing about all the different books you have been reading in school or at home. It is so important to make sure we read daily as this helps with our imaginations, develops and improves our language, and it helps us to develop our own writing skills.

During our whole class reading lessons this half-term, Year 5 will be studying the book, 'The Last Firefox' alongside exploring a variety of other fiction and non-fiction extracts. We will be practising our reading fluency, understanding word meanings in context, summarising and answering retrieval questions. We will use our inference skills to zoom in closer as we look at themes, characters and events in the texts.

   Maths

Across the year, we will be challenging and developing our knowledge of place value, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. As we work through the four operations, we will apply our mathematical knowledge to various word problems. The children will work on solving word problems with increasing independence, using manipulatives from around the classroom to build their confidence before moving onto pictorial and abstract representations.

This half-term, our focus in Maths will include place value, and addition and subtraction.

Through all of these units we will be exploring increasingly complex processes, so don't forget to keep logging onto TTRS to build confidence and speed in your times tables.

    RE

In our RE lessons this half-term, our unit is called 'Covenant and Creation'. Through this, we will be exploring the difference in creation account provided by the Babylonians and Genesis, what a covenant is and who God makes these with, the chronological story of Genesis into Exodus (specifically focusing on how the Israelites came to Egypt, how they were enslaved, and how God freed them). We will then continue this chronology out of Egypt and into the wilderness, before focusing in again on the Ten Commandments and finally the Promised Land.

    Science

This half-term in Science, Year 5 will be learning about Properties of materials. The children investigated materials such as wood, metal, plastic, glass and fabric, thinking carefully about what makes each material suitable for different uses. They will explore properties including hardness, transparency and magnetism, and learn how to classify and group materials according to their properties. The children will be carrying out practical investigations, making predictions and explaining their findings using scientific vocabulary.

History

This half-term in History, we are learning about the Ancient Greeks. Our studies will take us through the chronology of the Ancient Greek world – from the first Minoan Age, all the way through to the Archaic Period. We will then look at the different types of governance found within Greece, as well as the City States of later Greek ages, focusing specifically on Sparta and Athens. Children will be given the opportunity to write diary entries as young Athenians or Spartans. We will then explore the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greece, and how they were a Polytheistic people. Additionally, children will look at the most famous philosophers and scholars of the time – before finishing the unit with a Forest School lesson looking at everyday life.

Geography

Geography is not covered in Autumn 1. Instead, we will do History. In Autumn 2, we will explore Spacial Sense.

Design Technology

This half-term in Design and Technology, the children will be learning about the different foods of many cultures. We will explore what factors influence different ingredient choices, and our unit will end with children making a Greek-inspired Spanakopita!

Art

Art is not covered in Autumn 1, we will be doing DT instead.

Computing-

This half term we will be completing our Video Design unit. We will be working in teams to plan, record, edit and review our own video! We will be considering the best angles to use, and how different frames can be used to show a video audience different information. Also during this term, we will be looking at computer systems and networks.  The children will develop their understanding of networks and devices, and the role computers have in our lives.  The children have also considered the importance of staying safe and responsible when using technology.

Physical Education

Tag Rugby

This half term in Physical Education, Year 5 will be building on their prior knowledge and skills of Tag Rugby. The children will be developing their skills in passing, catching, running with the ball and finding space on the pitch. Through a range of fun and challenging activities, they have also been learning the importance of teamwork, communication, cooperation and sportsmanship. Tag Rugby encourages children to think quickly, make decisions and work together as a team.

Walking Home Alone

In preparation for high school, children in Year 5 and Year 6 whose parents have given written consent will be allowed to walk home alone at the end of the day. If you would like your child to walk home alone, please contact our school office at clerical@stsaviours.cheshire.sch.uk

Mobile phones

Children in Year 5 who are walking home may bring a mobile phone to school. During the day it will be switched off and kept safely in the classroom stock cupboard where children cannot access it. They will be handed to children at the end of the day to go home.

All classrooms have clocks, but children may wear a simple analogue or digital watch to school as it can help them learn to tell the time. However, no Apple or smartwatches please. These will be considered as a mobile device.
